The Two Fashion Powers - Tzaims & Yves
In 1966 the heat between two haute couture designers on both sides of the pond, one in New York City and one in Paris, both began their fashion houses the same year 1961.
Both designers were close in age, in NYC TZAIMS LUKSUS WAS 31 and in Paris Yves Saint Laurent was 29. Yves had been working with Dior previously from his teens but was cut off when he refused to serve in the French military.
Tzaims was in the US Navy, Military, from 1952 until 1956. He served honorably whereas Yves w.as imprisoned in an asylum for the mentally deranged and left dishonorably discharged. Neither had met.
Tzaims had no fashion design education nor worked in fashion until moving to Athens, Greece and Venice Italy, Fortuny in VeniceCity ithe nthe dpired him to print but on fine silk and not cotten, and being involved with haute couture fabrics. He didn't sketch dresses for women as did Yves.
Tzaims sketched architecture.
In 1961 Tzaims offered his first artistically tie diedq silks to Count Ferdinand Sarmi in NYC and it launched Tzaims into high fashion over night.
Pierre Berge found Yves in a mental institution under the French military that placed him there under electric shock treatments and bought him out starting the house of Yves Saint Laurent in 1961 -1963 but not very successfully at first. Being fired from Dior and the disgrace in the military didn't't vanish over night. His greatest design wasn't't even his but a US Navy Pea jacket copy and a Marlena Dietrict tux for women, also a copy. Then copying American hippy styles unsuccessfully.
Tzaims had no intention of competing with any one but just offering a new source from the US. Made in America.
Pm
In 1965 Tzaims had won all the fashion awards, first ever for fabric design
in existence with high end store buyers begging him to make his own clothes.
He decided to do this in 1965 and launched a very award winning collection hiring an assistant that though was somewhat known but had no individual talent for Design, know for copying Normsn Norell wherevisveife Claudia worked as a house model. Claudia begged Tzains to hire her husband George Halley as his assistant, George though stiff was yet good at basics so it was perfect to have Tzaims as creativc designer and as assistant good at cutting and sewing.
Georhe & Claudia Halley
A complete story about the callamatous Claudia and George has been Tzaims' secret since the day after the collection was shown to press and buyer in February 1966. Too shocking for public expose! Until now.
The House of Luksus was launched and went to the top worldwide in one day!. The press claimed Tzaims was the new Christian Dior.
Can you imagine how Paris felt about this. New York was already becoming a high fashion creative center more then Paris since Paris was locked in retro and Yves was their best bet giving French classic retro some new life.
But Tzaims changed that for Yves, or as best as Yves could adjust creatively.
Tzaims saw signs of Yves being influenced by him. Yves copied s US Navy Pea Jacket Tzaims wore from his time in the Navy, Yves created a tuxedo for women when the press announced Tzaimes liked black and white tie dinner parties. Of course everyone knew Hollywood with Marlena Ditrict wore the first tux in movies.
Yves named his dog Mujic, the Russian word for peasant knowing Tzaims,' father was from and related to Czarist Russia and then Yves did a whole collection of Russian stylesafter Tzaims presented his couture collection in Paris, end of Jj 1968 and after January Tzaims launnched in Paris and was invited by Prince Oblenski and Prince Yurievski to their reception at the George V In Paris, but the real crunch was Yves copying Tzaims'logo initials but Slaantin them in late 1968 moving his boutique YSL to Madison Avenue and launching YSL as a perfume. The first time Yves used it.
Tzaims' !Russian name and Coat of Arms
Money talks and Paris was dripping in gold. So Yves put Tzaims out of business in Paris and moved in on him in NYC.
Did Tzaims care? This is the real question to ask.
No. In the 6 years Tzaims started and rose to the top he was greatly abused.
From an art interest with artistic living and travel interests he was forced to continue dazzling a fickle fashion press with extraordinary collections and also with no ties to fashion or business previously he was abused by investors he trusted. Now you can laugh. trusting investors?
Whilst it had its wonderful elements he hod no one he could trust in the fashion industry. He wanted his life back so after creating a perfect and a beautiful collection, showing in Paris, he completed all he needed to prove his worth in fashion, meeting his long lost Russian Imperial family he actually was happy to end it.
People were more important, traveling was more important and now he could do that even though he never made any money in fashion. He became the only poor fashion celebrity, the poor and famous and was called the Phantom of the Paris Haute Couture., and by the NYC Village Voice, The Rasputin of Paris Haute Couture. Tzaims laughed since it was not only funny but placed him in a new limelight.
Finally he left America and Europe, alive and well at 93, and now lives and works with a new Butmese company Tzaims Luksus, Ltd, manufactured in Myanmar for world distribution., and having young Burmese men, spirited and innocent as boys working along side needing him as he needs and greatly admires them.
Right! People are important. Designer labels are fun and he has the first and the best of all logos, first of its kind. Tzaims is the father of Fashion Designer logos!
