Buckthorne Hall Estate

I came to the Village of Old Bennington one misty early morning in September 1963, Labor Day weekend from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and found this abandoned and neglected old mansion and overgrown gardenx and was astounded by the fact it was the house and grounds that I had in my child hood in a recurring dream

No one locally wanted it, in fact they either wanted it demolished or painted white but they didn't realize the important historic significance of this run down vintage master peice of American Shingle Style Architecture.

I did

It went inexpensively for me by the family estate that built and owned if from 1901 and approved me living in their wealthy family compound

The interior was as vintage as the exterior and still in solid condition although a few places the roof leaked

It was empty except for a few unwanted original pieces of furniture and all the original blue printx by the architect and the landscape and garden designer

I had what was to my delight an estate untouched by time as if inheriting it from my grandfather

Over 10 years I brought it back to life and immediately back into fashion and after restoring the original grounds with the first  peonies and other flowers brought directly from China and parts of Asia I turned the grounds into the master piece, to perfection, to the point it became the most sought after property in the Village of Old Bennington

Of course no local carpenter, mason, plumber, electrician or roofer would work for me to restore it since in this feudal town of Bennington a hatred for both the house and me as a villager on the hill, as they called me, an aristocrat, I was alienated by every one

A few works that did actually agree to fix something did more damage then repairs so I had to do everything myself

I was never able to find the places where the roof leaked even after replacing the cedar shingle roof with new cedar shingles

Brick and stone work began to crumble but that I could rebuild having sculptural and construction skills, but in the later years around 2010 a great amount of hidden places where water was damaging side walls and chimneys cracking I could no longer repair anything, then my younger brother died who lived there with me for 50 years who chose to be buried in the garden

The cold winters without central heat or running water, the toilets filled with anti freeze convinced me to spend winters in tropical places

I first moved to Palm Beach Island, Florida but after 6 months I found it boring and lifeless

Next winter I went to Key West, Florida.  It was fun but being taken over by the Russian Maffia creating escallating costs and high cost of living

The next year a remained in the cold and brutal Vermont with a smoking kitchen wood stove and chimney ready to collapse and smelly kerosine heaters

So in winter 2017 I went to Thailand and stayed with a Burmese native hill tribe family in a remote jungle village

I returned there the next winter and stayed with the same hill tribe

In 2019 I stayed in the cold Vermont

Then in January 2020 I went to Princeville, Kauai, Hawaii for a month and took a direct flight to Rangoon, Burma, through Guam when Covid in March 2020 locked me down for 5 years in Burma

These immortalised photos show how I left my property in 2020 but in those 5 years locked down in Rangoon the weather destroyed much of it and then vandals and looters destroyed it further

I finally had to give it up to fate and the mercenary neighbors and politicians in the village and town
●
My only reward is that  without a major amount of money, at least $3,Million, the mansion cannot be lived in without total restoration and the fact it is protected by the Vermont Historic & Cultural Society, value of both mansion and gardens, wildlife sanctuary, wood land meadows and lawns that I contributed to its perfect restoration, it cannot ever be demolished or altered from it's original architectural and landscape plans or sub divided into building lots.

My younder brother is buried in the garden as sentinal and guardian spirit along with the builder Howaed Hart Sjields'spirit to drive anyone not suitable out and off the premisis

    3. It is fascinating to see the home in its former glory. I’m very sorry for the circumstances. I hope whatever remains can be salvaged. Your love and dedication to the home and grounds was apparent.
